Covid 19 Virus Update

To our valued clients, friends and colleagues:

Although we are all experiencing difficulties and challenges as a result of the Coronavirus and the necessary safety measures, please know that Cohen and Bodo will continue to aggressively advance the interests of our clients. We understand that you may have questions about the effects the current restrictions may have on pending cases.

As to those claims which are not filed in court, we expect to continue to prosecute these cases with the insurance companies online and by telephone. Although we have no control over the manner in which insurance carriers handle their staffing during this crisis, negotiations should proceed without significant delay in the short term and our attorneys continue to work diligently in an effort to resolve these cases expeditiously. We will of course continue to keep you up to date on an individual basis.

As to those cases already filed in court, the Supreme Court of the State of Illinois has addressed the handling of these cases and each of the Circuit Courts have implemented their own policies generally in conformity with the Supreme Court’s directive. The Illinois Supreme Court Master List of schedules/closings may be found at: http://illinoiscourts.gov/Administrative/covid-19.asp.

Generally, court cases are being continued for about 30 days at this point, although the different counties may vary somewhat. For example, In Cook County, Chief Judge Evans postponed most cases for a 30-day period starting Tuesday (March 17) due to the spread of the coronavirus. The 30-day period runs from March 17 through April 15. Likewise, in Lake County, all matters are now rescheduled and continued for 28 days as of March 16th. The Courts will of course, continue to monitor the situation and will be following CDC recommendations.

These precautionary measures, while certainly necessary, will slow down the progress of those cases in court. All attorneys and all litigants in all Courts are in same position. Although the current circumstances are out of anyone’s control, we will do everything we can to minimize the impact to our clients. To that end, our office remains open every day so that our attorneys and staff can continue meeting our clients’ needs. We will also continue to keep you advised of any changes. Please look for further emails and calls from our office as we work through these difficult times together.

We wish you and your families all the best. Stay home and stay healthy.
